It is imperative that complex restoration cases be carefully planned and managed from the onset.  Based on decades of practical experience, Baluke Dental Studios has developed a very effective method for handling these cases.  The following is a broad anatomy of our case management process.

1.    Creation of Study Models
       a.    Duplicates stay at Lab

2.    Discussion of case on every level – Create a plan
       a.    On phone

3.    Mock ups
       a.    Digital

4.    Clear Vacuum Stent or Putty Index
       a.    Used as prep guide
       b.    Form for temporaries

5.    Creation and insertion of provisionals
       a.    Temporaries – a basic covering, short term
       b.    Provisionals – diagnostic tool, can be long term

6.    Study model of accepted temporary or provisional prosthetics


7.    Preparation
       a.    Discuss preparation plan as per case plan
          i.    Margins as necessary
          ii.    Reductions as necessary
          iii.    Stump shade if necessary
          iv.    Dozens of other possible details

8.    Impression taking as per plan – an overall schematic
       a.    Bite – centric
       b.    Facial plane relator
       c.    Occlusal plane relator – Face bow if necessary
       d.    Pictures – Shading@Baluke.com
          i.    Forehead to chin straight on

Often, dentists will miss several steps of this process by submitting an impression, a single colour and a brief instruction.  For single unit PFMs, this is often acceptable. However, with complex cases the lack of detailed information and cooperative planning could lead to costly difficulties later on.
